The fifth season of Smallville, an American television series, began airing on September 29, 2005. The series recounts the early adventures of Kryptonian Clark Kent as he adjusts to life in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, during the years before he becomes Superman. The fifth season comprises 22 episodes and concluded its initial airing on May 11, 2006,[1] marking the final season that aired on The WB. Regular cast members during season five include Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, John Glover, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider.
Season 5 deals with the aftermath of the second meteor shower. Clark deals with adult life, going to college, a real relationship with Lana, and the loss of someone he loves. His distrust for Lex continues to grow, as Clark's professor begins supplying him with evidence of LuthorCorp's secret projects. Clark looks to Chloe for support, while Lionel's transformation into a better person draws skepticism from everyone. Jensen Ackles, who played Jason Teague, left the show after season four, and Erica Durance became a series regular as Lois Lane. The writers also brought in Arthur Curry, Victor Stone, and Andrea Rojas, DC Comics superheroes, in three separate guest spots as well as the classic Superman villain Brainiac.
After spending seasons three and four airing on Wednesday at 8:00 pm (ET), Smallville was moved to Thursday at 8:00 pm, where it stayed for four seasons. Season five rose from the previous season, averaging 4.7 million viewers weekly.[2] This was the last season to air on the WB Network. Season 6 and all following seasons aired on The CW Network following a merger of the WB and UPN networks.
Since the second season, a promotional tie-in titled Chloe's Chronicles was established to wrap up "unfinished business" from the television series through the use of internet episodes.[25] During season five, the series was evolved into Vengeance Chronicles. In this series, Chloe joins forces with a costumed vigilante she dubs the "Angel of Vengeance", who was introduced in the episode "Vengeance", to expose Lex Luthor's Level 33.1 experiments on meteor-infected people.[26]
In 2006, the show was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Editing for a Series for the fifth-season episode "Arrival".[27][28] Allison Mack was awarded Best Sidekick in 2006.[29] Guest star Emily Hirst was nominated for a Young Artist Award for her portrayal of Maddie Van Horn in "Fragile".[30] In 2006, the show was nominated for a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in "Commencement".[31][32] For the 32nd Annual Saturn Awards, the show received seven nominations: Best Network Television Series; Best Actor and Actress for Tom Welling and Kristin Kreuk; Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Michael Rosenbaum, Erica Durance and Allison Mack; and Best Television Release on DVD.[33]
The complete fifth season of Smallville was released on September 12, 2006 in North America.[34] Additional releases in region 2 and region 4 took place on August 28, 2006 and April 4, 2007, respectively.[35][36] The DVD box set included various special features, including episode commentary, The Chloe Chronicles: Volume II, a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the 100th episode, Vengeance Chronicles webisodes, and a preview of the documentary Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman.[37]
The episode starts off in a laboratory showing a man held captive in an upright, tubular cage. A Dr. Hong opens the cage and releases the man and apologizes for what they did to him and gives him a picture. An alarm is triggered and the man runs from the room as security begins to chase him. He escapes the facility and security. We then see Lana Lang driving her SUV and after being distracted for a second, she looks up and sees the man in front of the road. Lana hits him, but the car wraps itself around him, ala Clark Kent a season or two ago, and Lana is injured. The man takes Lana to the hospital and then leaves. She calls Clark for help.
The fifth season gave Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) one of his biggest storylines of all time as he was running for senator. But what is a hot race without some Luthor competition as Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) was running against him.
One of the best big bads in the whole show was the iconic Superman foe Brainiac (James Marsters) who became one of the main threats in season five. Posing first as a human teacher named Milton Fine when Clark began attending college; Brainiac was playing the long game. But in the eighth episode, Brainiac finally reveals who he really is to Clark.
Before Clark realizes it, Zod banishes him to the Phantom Zone as the cliffhanger features Clark prisoned before he drifts further into space. Having started big, the finale wrapped the season up even bigger as it set things up for the next season.
Smallville is one of the most iconic and long-running DC adaptations. The series was a reimaging of the Superman story that redefined the character for the 21st century and introduced a new generation to Superman and the world of DC Comics. Starting in season four of the series the creators started bringing in the wider DC universe. Heroes like Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Zatanna, and Martian Manhunter were just a few of the popular DC heroes to appear in the series.
Yet while the series got so many iconic DC heroes, there were some pretty famous names that never made it on the series. These reasons were due to behind-the-scenes complications due to the inner workings of Warner Bros. and DC Comics. While many of these characters would later appear in the Smallville season 11 comic series published between 2012 and 2013, it still was not the same as getting to see them in live-action, interacting with the soon-to-be Superman. These are five of DC's biggest superheroes that never appeared in Smallville.
The reason for Batman's denial was simple: Warner Bros. had the character off limits due to the Batman film projects in development which morphed into The Dark Knight trilogy. Batman Begins opened in 2005, the summer after season four concluded, and The Dark Knight opened in the summer of 2008 between seasons seven and eight.
The creators found plenty of ways around not being able to use Batman. In the season five episode, Vengeance, the character of Arcata was reimagined as a Batman-type vigilante. In season six, the series introduced Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow. Green Arrow is also a billionaire superhero with no superpowers but an array of high-tech gadgets.
Despite Wonder Woman never appearing in the series, the show's creators dropped a number of references to her. A headline referencing the Queen of Themsyicara was shown in season three, and in a season nine episode taking place at a comic book convention, Lois Lane dresses up in an Amazon princess outfit that is very similar to Wonder Woman's classic comic costume.
The fictional superhero in the series, Warrior Angel, has a logo similar to Wonder Woman's and in season 10 Chloe Sullivan tells Clark about "a wondrous woman" and in the same breath she mentions a reference to Batman as "a billionaire with high-tech toys." Wonder Woman may not have appeared in the series, but her presence was surely felt.
While Constantine never did get to appear on Smallville, he got his own television series in 2014. While it was canceled after only one season star Matt Ryan went on to reprise his role in the Arrowverse as part of Legends of Tomorrow and would play a role in DC's epic crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. With a sequel to the Keanu Reeves movie in development and Jenna Coleman playing Johanna Constantine on Sandman, it goes to show how far Warner Bros. has come with letting multiple versions of a character exist since Smallville aired.
Smallville was an American television series, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on the largest hero of all-time, Superman. The series addressed the transition of young Clark Kent from his adolescence to adulthood, showing all the problems faced by an ordinary teenager, as well as developing superpowers and finding discoveries about his true origins. Starring Tom Welling, Smallville lasted for ten seasons.
In the season premiere "Zod", Jor-El reveals to Martha that Clark using the dagger against Brainiac eliminated him and all of his duplicates, but also damaged the Fortress and released Zod. Brainiac was still active within the Kryptonian black box, the Black Ship's hard drive.
Season Five of the superhero fantasy teen drama series Smallville aired on the WB Network from September 29th, 2005 to May 11th, 2006, spanning a total of twenty-two episodes. Season five welcomes back cast members from previous seasons including Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, John Glover as Lionel Luthor, Annette O'Toole as Martha Kent, and John Schneider as Jonathan Kent. Actress Erica Durance, who had previously been a guest star in season four, is now bumped up series regular.
In many ways, the exit of Michael Rosenbaum and Kristen Kreuk was a blessing in disguise. The absence of Lex Luthor and Lana Lang meant the writers could no longer use these characters as crutches for the stories. The changeover of showrunners also meant the show had a new vision. Turns out that these changes were the best thing to happen for Smallville for many seasons.
The addition of Oliver Queen to the main cast also gives Clark a regular superhero confidante to bounce off and further migrates him to the world of superheroes. Season 8 was one of the best seasons of Smallville in years, by a large margin.
The final three seasons of Smallville always felt very fan-servicey. As Clark grew tantalizingly close to his heroic destiny, he entered the world of superheroes and met familiar faces from the classic comics. He even wore the S on his chest. 781b155fdc
